NCC Discipline Policy

School is a place to learn.  All of us at North Chevy Chase Elementary School need to do our parts to create and reinforce a positive educational environment.  To that end, we believe that appropriate behavior skills must be taught, modeled, and reinforced just as academic skills are taught, modeled, and reinforced.  Our focus is on teaching students what they are expected to do and on helping them understand how appropriate behavior from every student is necessary for a positive learning environment.  The cooperation of many people is necessary to help our students understand that they are responsible for their behavior and must accept the consequences of their actions.  We rely on the support and close cooperation of home, school, and community to get across our message that children benefit most when they are able to live and learn in a safe, structured, and respectful atmosphere.

Rights and Responsibilities of Students

RESPECT:  treating others, as they would like to be treated and respecting the property of others.

RESPONSIBILITY:  acting in ways that do not take away from the rights of others.

FAMILY:  working together as a group for the benefit of all.

TRUST:  telling the truth and acting with integrity.

CARING:  being kind and encouraging to others.

Specific Expectations

Students show RESPECT for the learning environment by not bringing any of the following objects to school...

ô       skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, or scooters

ô       electronic game toys or other electronic instruments or equipment

Students and parents should use appropriate judgment and discretion when selecting items suitable to bring to school.  Parents may call the teacher if they have a question about the suitability of an item.

Classroom Behavior

At the beginning of each school year, the teacher and his/her class will develop a set of behavior expectations that are consistent with the school discipline policy but which reflect the ideas of that class.  The teachers will use a character education framework for developing classroom expectations.

We fully expect that students will learn and follow school behavior guidelines, use good self-control, and monitor their own actions at all times.  In this way, everyone will be able to enjoy a positive learning environment without the need for disciplinary action.

Consequences for Violating Discipline Policy

All students are held responsible for their own behavior.  When a student at North Chevy Chase needs to be disciplined for violating a school rule, the intervening staff member may follow one or more of several options.

1)   A conference between the student and the staff member - referral to peer mediation

2)   Restricted privileges within the scope of the school day

3)   Student-teacher-parent conference (including telephone conference)

4)   Referral to the principal

5)   Parent-principal conference (may also involve the teacher and/or student)

6)   Suspension from school for one to ten days (determined by the principal)

7)   Recommendation for expulsion (determined by the principal)

One of the keys to successful behavior intervention is communication with the parent(s).  While the parent(s) will not be notified every time a child is corrected for minor violations of the discipline policy, staff members will promptly involve the parent(s) if the situation involves a serious infraction or disruption to the classroom environment.

Serious Disciplinary Incidents

For any students who pose a serious disruptive threat or who have been reported to the administrators for repeated misbehaviors, the principal may exceed the maximum penalties as listed.  While none of the following infractions are anticipated, it is important that students understand the consequences of these actions.
