This year, the PTA Cultural Arts programs will be selected by PTA Committee Chair Priscilla Peterson (301-942-1720).

D.A.R.E. :  County-wide 5th grade drug and alcohol awareness program.  This program replaces social studies class for several weeks and focuses on 4 major areas:  providing accurate information about alcohol  & drugs; teaching students decision-making skills; resisting peer pressure; and alternatives to drug use.  It is taught by a County Police Officer.  Children draw posters and write poems to express what they've learned, and are given DARE t-shirts.  Parents are invited to attend the DARE graduation ceremony.  DARE is a cooperative program between the Montgomery County Police Department and MCPS.  This year’s program begins on March 5, 2001 and the graduation ceremony is planned for April 6, 2001.

The Giant school code is 0651.  The Safeway school code is 0794.  Chevy Chase Supermarket receipts should be placed in the collection box in the school lobby.   For direct links to sign-up and more information, click here.

Week of March 12, 2001 (6th Grade)
CRT April 30 - June 8

MSPAP May 8-12, 2001 (3rd Grade)
May 15-19, 2001 (5th Grade)

Testing:  California Test of Basic Skills (CTBS): Given to the 4th and 6th grades only at NCC.  Scheduled this year for 4th grade during the week of February 26, 2001 and 6th grade during the week of March 12, 2001.  The CTBS is a component of the TerraNova series of assessments published by CTB/McGraw-Hill.  Now in its fifth edition, the CTBS is a nationally norm-referenced test that describes the performance of an individual student in comparison to the performances of a national sample of students who took the CTBS under similar conditions in 1996. The CTBS contains multiple-choice items in reading/language arts and mathematics with two skills subtests, language mechanics and mathematics computation.  In terms of reading language arts, the CTBS is very similar to the multiple-choice reading test that is included in our Criterion Reference Tests (CRTs).  In math, the curriculum in grades 4 and 6 includes the skills students need to do well on the test.

Testing:  Criterion Reference Test (CRT) :  Montgomery County Public Schools uses three types of tests to determine how well students have learned from instruction they have received on curriculum objectives set by the state and local district in reading, writing, and mathematics.  The tests used are multiple choice, open ended, and performance assessment.  Together, they are called the Criterion-Referenced Tests (CRTs). The tests are scheduled to be administered April 30th through June 8th for all students in grades three through six.  A detailed schedule of specific testing days is sent home prior to administering the tests.  Parents will receive a report of your child's individual performance on the CTBS and the reading and math multiple choice and math open ended portion of the CRT.

Testing:  Maryland State Performance Assessment Program  (MSPAP ):  This test is administered in grades three, five, and eight in reading, writing, language usage, mathematics, science and social studies and included in the Maryland School Performance Program (MSPP) report.  These assessments require students to apply what they know and can do to solve problems, reason, explain, recommend, and display other "higher order" thinking skills.  Results are analyzed on a school wide basis, and individual scores are not available.  More information on MSPAP testing philosophies, methods and results will be made available during the school year.  MSPAP’s for the 2000-2001 academic year are scheduled to be administered for the third grade from May 8th through 12th and the fifth grade from May 15th through 19th.

T-Shirt/Sweatshirt Sales * :  Annual sale of t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the artwork that adorns the front hall.  In addition, look for a new design this year!  Chairs are Peg O’Donnell (301-933-0899) and Ardoth Hassler (301-949-1285).

Winter Fundraiser *:  January PTA fundraiser.  Past activities include selling Joe Corbi Pizzas, and selling Human-i-tees T-shirts.  Look for more information about this year's activity.  Isabelle Koenig (301-656-1092) is the Chair this year.
